Cruise liners drop anchor here to shop for staff

Experienced pilots and aircraft engineers, from India, were always popular with carriers in the Gulf and Asia, but now cruise companies are eyeing Indian professionals from different pockets, ranging from chefs and photographers to deck and engine crew.

Industry sources estimate that at least 10,000 people are likely to be hired by cruise liners this year from India, with an all-expenses paid take-home, varying from $300-$3,000 per month. Indian professionals typically in this space work for five to six years with cruise companies before returning for other opportunities in the hospitality industry, BPOs, marketing companies, etc.

With 50,000 holidaymakers likely from India, cruise holidays are getting popular and operators are buying more luxury ships causing demand for service personnel to rise. Besides, they need to deal with an active turnaround cycle, which demands regular replacement.

Our Say

While western cruising companies tend to patronise locals for front-line duties, which involve direct customer interaction, for back-room operations, including the kitchen, Indian talent is tapped. Indian professionals are not only seen as disciplined and efficient, but are also likely to stay with the company longer.

Since cruise companies employ between 60-80 photographers on board a large vessel, this community of specialists is also being wooed in significant numbers from India. For instance, Carnival alone has placed a demand for 75 photographers from India this year. There are also local institutes which run advanced culinary arts programmes for one/three months to turn candidates into experts in French, Italian and Spanish cooking, since continental and Mediterranean food is in huge demand with cruise liners.
