gearing up for India entry |
 |
Japan’s leading car maker,
Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd is keen on entering India’s
500,000 per annum compact car market and lately
sent a team to assess the market conditions.
Daihatsu is a subsidiary
of Toyota Motor Corporation, which has a manufacturing
venture in India in collaboration with the Kirloskar
Group, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd.
Daihatsu’s competence
is in making compact cars and has a current range
that includes Cuore (sold as Charade in some markets),
Sirion, YRV, Terios and Copen. The company already
has a strong presence in Asia with joint ventures
or dealer networks in Bangladesh, Brunei, Hong
Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines,
Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
| Industry
experts are of the opinion that the
compact car market in India is expected
to increase in volume considerably
in the coming year. Understandably
the world’s leading automobile
manufacturers are keen on claiming
their share of India’s compact

Suzuki’s Swift are likely to
be among the first to be launched

| Eisai
to set up pharma R&D, manufacturing base in
India |
 |
| Eisai, the
first Japanese pharma major to set up shop in India,
is now considering making India a manufacturing
as well as research base.
Entering the
Indian market with a wholly-owned subsidiary in
Mumbai a few months ago, Eisai is likely to begin
commercial operations, with two of its exclusive
products. Aricept, a drug for the treatment of Alzheimer's
disease, and Aciphex/Pariet, a proton pump inhibitor
which is used in the treatment of stomach ulcers,
will be sold in the Indian market by mid-’05.
This will be followed by Myonal, a muscle relaxant,
in ’06.
Eisai also has
a JV with Wockhardt to market one of its leading
products, Methycobal (mecobalamine), in India. The
drug is used in treating several nerve disorders
that inflict diabetic patients.
However Deepak
Naik, managing director Eisai Pharmaceuticals India
stated clearly that Eisai sees India not only as
a marketing set-up but also a sourcing hub and would
like to do some of its development work in the country.
Eisai currently
has centres for clinical trials located at the All
India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New
Delhi, the Shri Chitra Hospital in Kerala and a
third centre located at Ahmedabad in India. With
India emerging as hub for clinical trials, Eisai
is keen on a clinical trials arm in India. |
