| World leader
of code division multiple access (CDMA) digital
wireless technology, Qualcomm Incorporated has listed
India among the most emerging markets across the
globe in view of its growth perspective.
Qualcomm lately
acquired California-based Spike Technologies Inc,
a chip design centre in Bangalore. Spike has a niche
application and expertise to connect applications
to the global network.
Kanwalinder Singh,
president, Qualcomm India commenting on the company’s
interest in India suggested that CDMA will play
a dominant role in voice and data services because
of its architecture compared with the GSM technology.
Qualcomm also
announced the opening of a BREW developer lab in
Mumbai, one of nine worldwide. An acronym for binary
runtime environment for wireless, BREW is the platform
that is taking on Sun Microsystems' Java in the
mobile data applications segment.
The Mumbai lab
will provide Indian application and mobile game
developers access to the latest BREW-enabled handsets,
software and testing tools well before their commercial
launch. Besides, the lab will also provide developers
access to hands-on technical support from Qualcomm.
With Reliance
Infocomm and Tata Teleservices Ltd focusing on blanket
CDMA coverage across the country, Qualcomm is keen
on starting with rural applications, including specific
segmentations such as e-governance, distance education,
health and medical and insurance.
Commenting on
Qualcomm's BREW developer lab in Mumbai, Mahesh
Prasad, president of the applications and solutions
group for Reliance Infocomm said that it only helped
to further Reliance's efforts to nurture the developer
community in India.
